Guru rohini bhate
For over sixty years, Guru Rohini Bhate had focussed her energies on teaching and performing Kathak. Groomed in the art by the late Guru Lachhu Maharaj and the late Guru Mohanrao Kallianpurkar, she had evolved a unique, rich style all her own.
Guru Bhate’s multi-faceted scholarly interests allowed her to cull the best from the rich oral traditions of India. Her study of music complemented her literary creations, giving a novel repertoire of Kathak dance numbers.
In her roles of writer, translator, orator, theoretician, teacher and dancer, Guru Bhate embodied a harmonious blend of high classicism with contemporary expression… a synergistic celebration of the performing arts.
Guru Bhate’s numerous papers on Kathak have revealed her erudition... And her practical contributions to various Kathak curricula at Universities were sought after.

Guru Rohini Bhate, the doyenne of Kathak dance was one artiste whose creativity had found new vistas for expression on the modern stage, and she had consistently used the auditorium stage for full scale Kathak ballets for a number of years.
Guru Rohini ji’s work in this specialised field of creative expression in kathak, however, deserves close study for it is replete with compositions that have expanded the scope of her art form. From the diversity of subjects to their innovative execution, each of her projects bears the hallmark of true genius.
The themes are in keeping with her erudition. They also testify to the broad-based scope of the art form. From the visually very rich seasons depicted in Ritugaan to abstract concepts like Time, Flight, Tanmatra (the five elements). Guru Rohini ji’s approach to her chosen subject was always startlingly fresh for she believed that each theme demands its own treatment, its own handling.
Guru Rohini ji’s success lies in her rendition of even the most abstract subjects without ever once straying outside the accepted norms of traditional Kathak.
